Happy New Year!
I can’t believe it’s 2019 already. Like seriously, where did the year go? I feel like 2018 flew by.
Anywho, I’m a huge fan of Gretchen Rubin and her podcast Happier. Last year, she and her sister did a spin on New Year’s resolutions. You create a list of 19 things you want to accomplish in 2019. Instead of the typical arbitrary or massive goals, they had a mixture of large and small goals for the upcoming year.
I love this idea for a bunch of reasons.
- For those nagging tasks that you’ve been meaning to do for years, this creates an accountability avenue.
- This method employs SMART goals (specific, measurable, attainable, relevant, and time-based). SMART goals is something I teach and preach in my day job, so I love the overlap.
- The number matching makes my nerd brain happy.
I’m using this method for my 2019 resolutions, but you could totally apply it in a variety of ways. Maybe like 9 things to accomplish before your baby arrives, 12 things to do your senior year, 30 things to do before your 30th birthday. See. There a billion combinations.
Now, without further ado, my 19 for 2019:
- See a dermatologist. Personal history + family history + new freckles = time for an appointment.
- Finish the Little Mermaid cross stitch pattern I started when I was pregnant (!)
- Complete our cross stitch family portrait. Drew gifted me the first edition of this book for my first Mother’s Day. I already have the patterns drawn and supplies purchased. Just need to stitch it.
- Crochet the Doctor Who blanket pattern Drew got me for Christmas.
- Clean out and organize the garage.
- Build a new entertainment center.
- Move all my hobby/craft/blog supplies to the office. They are currently scattered between the office and the overflowing spare room closet (which also has some of Drew’s stuff stored in it).
- Read 52 books in 52 weeks. (I surprised myself by reading 39 in 2018!)
- Fix the torn stripping on my car’s hatch. It’s one of those simple tasks that has been on my list for years….
- Refinish the dining room table.
- Go to FitCamp (my gym) 2 times a week.
- Publish one blog post each week.
- Get my thyroid checked. Again, family history + the recommendation of someone on my medical team.
- Take Anderson on a mommy and me adventure once a month.
- Plant (and keep alive!) something (well, not ‘something’ but a plant, probably a tree) in our backyard. It’s all grass back there, and Anderson gets so excited whenever he finds a leave from a neighbor’s yard. This kid needs a tree, y’all.
- Date night with Drew once a month.
- Read all of the unread books on my shelf. Note: If I’m not feeling a book once I start reading it, I’m allowed to quit it. Life’s too short to read books that you don’t enjoy.
- Create a family yearbook. I’m loving the tutorials from Emily Ley and Young House Love. This has been on my to do list for years!
- Read the entire Bible. A group of my girlfriends are doing this together using The Bible Recap podcast as our guide.
I haven’t decided if I’ll check back in with y’all mid-year or every quarter to update on how things are going, but I promise I won’t leave you hanging. And of course I’ll document my progress over on Instagram, so be sure you’re following.
